2017 - League of Humane Voters of New Jersey Endorsements

November 7, 2017 Election Day

For endorsement purposes, LOHV-NJ makes no distinction between cruelty to companion or domestic animals, and cruelty to wildlife.

This inclusive policy can lead to apparent arbitrary endorsements. A legislator who actively sponsors or repeatedly votes for legislation promoting cruel trapping or killing of wildlife will not obtain an LOHV-NJ endorsement even if he or she sponsors, or votes for, an anti-cruelty bill for other animals. Too often. legislators working hand in glove with the shooting, trapping, or archery industries deliberately sponsor "anti-cruelty" bills to inoculate themselves from a humane backlash. The League chooses not to be divided, nor conquered.

In certain cases, LOHV-NJ has factored in previous, humane votes cast during the previous session against damaging wildlife bills, or assistance in halting negative legislation, to arrive at our endorsement.

LOHV-NJ Scorecard

LOHV-NJ endorses Phil Murphy for Governor

We believe that as Governor, Ambassador Murphy will be a breath of fresh air for pro-animal advocates of New Jersey. He has vowed to stop the bear hunt, is opposed to leghold traps, and has old our representatives that he supports our pro-animal agenda. We believe that he will fight for animal issues and protect our environment. Furthermore, we will hold him to these sacred promises.

LOHV-NJ Local Endorsements

ENDORSEMENT: JERSEY CITY MAYOR

Steven Fulop - WINNER

Mayor Fulop has demonstrated a solid commitment to animal protection issues in New Jersey. He helped initiate the toughest wild animal circus ban in the state by banning the circuses on both public and private property. His passion for helping wild animals who are forced to perform in traveling shows was the driving force behind Jersey City's ban on this cruelty. From animals who suffer in circuses to companion animals, Fulop is the compassionate choice for Jersey City.

"I am incredibly proud to have received this endorsement from the New Jersey League of Humane Voters, and I look forward to continuing to work together with an organization that plays such an important role in fighting for animal protection laws throughout our state," said Mayor Fulop. "We have taken important steps in Jersey City to implement animal protection laws. From creating a healthier pets program that offers discounts to local vets, to providing free rabies and distemper shots at events throughout the city, to working to ban circuses that force animals to perform, we have committed to building an animal-friendly Jersey City."

ENDORSEMENT: MONMOUTH COUNTY FREEHOLDER

Pat Impreveduto (R) - WINNER

While on the Holmdel Township Committee, Pat Impreveduto, former Committeeman and Mayor and current Deputy Mayor, has expressed his concern for the humane treatment of Holmdel's deer. Impreveduto stated that he "truly believe[s] wildlife populations provide social, economic, and aesthetic benefits for all residents of Holmdel," and he has demonstrated his willingness to explore new ideas of deer management in a safe and humane manner.

More recently, when presented with the issue of wild and exotic animals in traveling circuses, he conveyed wholeheartedly that these venues are no place for such animals. He was extremely receptive to idea of a ban on the use of wild and exotic animals in traveling circuses.

Please note that LOHV-NJ is not extending an endorsement to Lillian Blurry.

ENDORSEMENT: RARITAN TOWNSHIP COUNCIL

Joyce Santos (D) - DEFEATED
A challenger, Joyce is considering her position on Raritan Township's newly authorized deer hunt on open space land. She is discussing the issue with potential constuents and learning there is a lot of opposition to the hunt.

Here's Joyce's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/JoyceforRaritanTownship/

LOHV-NJ had to make a call on this race. We believe that Joyce is a better choice than the others currently sitting on the council and the two other challengers. If Joyce wins this election, LOHV-NJ looks forward to working with her.

Remarks/Qualifications

Logging, perimeter, poaching, and Sunday hunting bills: Legislation to allow commercial logging on "forest stewartship" lands had few supporters - New Jersey Audubon, New Jersey Outdoor Alliance (animal-use trade lobby), and commercial loggers. The bills were strongly opposed by the New Jersey Chapter of the Sierra Club, several environmental organizations, and Bill Wolfe, (see above like) New Jersey's premier environmental blogger. Likewise, Audubon ad hunters lobbied for the perimeter, poaching, and Sunday hunting bills.

On these matters, many if not all animal-friendly legislators in the Senate and Assembly voted with Audubon and Environment and Energy Committee Chair Bob Smith (D-17), thinking that the issues were "ecological" instead of commercial (yet remember, Sierra Club, the quintessential environmental group, lobbied against the measures). On many issues, the Smith-Audubon combination is deadly for forests and wildlife. Part of this, undoubtedly, is Smith's leverage and power derived from pay-to-play and political action committee or PACs. New Jersey politics at its finest.

District 4: Bad: votes on logging, perimeter, and poaching; Good: Assemblyman Paul Moriarity (D) did vote for the resolution invalidating the game council's leghold regulation (see scorecard link above).

District 6: Bad: votes on Sunday hunting, perimeter, and logging; Good: Assemblyman Louis Greenwald (D) did vote for the resolution invalidating the game council leghold regulation.

District 7: Bad: votes on Sunday hunting, perimeter, and logging; Good: Assemblyman Herbert Conaway (D) co-sponsored and voted for the resolution invalidating the game council leghold resolution.

District 13: The League of Humane Voters of New Jersey has never endorsed a member of the hunters' legislator caucus. We note, however, that Senator Declan O'Scanlon (R) has improved considerably, voting against the logging bill - and the majority, see above - and, importantly, for our resolution that would have invalidated the New Jersey Fish and Game Council's regulation allowing three types of steel-jaw, leghold traps in violation of New Jersey's statute. He also voted against logging and the perimeter bill.

District 13: Assemblywoman Amy Handlin (R) has the same record as Senator O'Scanlon (he actually voted against perimeter, she in favor). She is not a member of the hunter caucus.

District 28: Senator Ronald Rice (D) has improved. In the past, he has voted for Sunday hunting, perimeter, and logging, yet voted against the poaching bill. More recently, he has co-sponsored S2141 to remove the black bear from the game code, supported Nosey's Law, the trophy ban, and the ban on shark fins.

District 33: Senator Brian P. Stack (R) had a negative voting record for wildlife, voting for the poaching, perimeter, logging, and Sunday hunting bills. More recently, however, Senator Stack has voted for the resolution invalidating the game council's leghold regulation and co-sponsored legislation removing the black bear from the game code.

Editors' note: Certain legislators have improved, especially on priority issues such as the leghold trap. Others have been more consistently humane. After eight years in the wilderness for wildlife, LOHV-NJ has made a decision to bow to reality and to endorse candidates who have shown improvement and, critically, support our important issues. This in no way detracts from humane voters' appreciation for longtime legislative friends.

Ballot Question # 2 - Please vote YES.
